Schedule a Lesson

At Mather Golf Course we understand that everybody has different athletic abilities and skill levels. We individualize make our instruction to suit each player's body type, ability and skill. We know that better posture, alignment and improving swinging technique make for a more successful and enjoyable game of golf.

If there's one aspect of golf that far too many amateurs overlook, it's the value of qualified instruction as a method to improve and advance in golf scoring and the pleasure of the game. Many habits, though repeated for years, are not based in the fundamentals recognized by all teaching professionals. One lesson often unlocks unlimited scoring potential by correcting basic flaws in swing, grip, posture and set-up.

Scheduling a lesson is easy. Just call Mather Golf Course at (916) 364-4354 ext. 5. Ask to enroll in the group lesson of your choice or if you have an individual instructor in mind book a lesson with that instructor. Our instruction staff, Joe Findley, PGA and Vinny Jacobs teach seven days a week for your convenience.

Golf Tip:
When thinking of your swing, imagine how a roller coaster works, it climbs the first and biggest hill very slowly and almost stops at the top, think of that as your backswing, then once it starts down that big hill, it starts down with gradual, forceful momentum, that would be your downswing, and finally at the bottom where you feel like your stomach wants to fall out LOL is where you impact the ball.

Brian Fuentes, PGA

"A Good Swing Starts with Strong Fundamentals"

Born in Sacramento, Brian started playing golf at the age of 12. He grew up playing golf and participating in more than 40 local junior tournaments. After taking 2nd place in his first tournament, Brian knew he wanted to become more serious with the game. During high school Brian's nickname was "Dave Pelz Jr." after having 16 hole outs in a two week span during his sophomore year while attending Laguna Creek H.S. "Ever since the beginning I wanted to become a PGA Golf Professional, says Brian. There is nothing better than seeing someone happy after hitting good shots and improving."

Brian has had the opportunity to learn from the best and teach some of the best in the nation. During his time as the 1st Assistant Professional at Whitney Oaks Brian worked with Top 100 PGA Instructor and former PGA Tour Player Keith Lyford. Brian has taught many top junior and collegiate players during his almost 20 years in the golf industry. Driving Tips:
Tee your ball up with at least half the ball above the top of your driver to gain distance and promote a draw. If you pop up or sky your tee shot, move farther away and set your driver slightly inside the center of the ball. This will promote a flatter swing plane with an inside approach to the ball. The tee should still be in the ground and not broken on a properly struck tee shot. Only tee the ball lower if you are trying to intentionally fade the ball.

He then moved to San Jose and continued his junior golf in Northern California. He played his college golf at West Valley. Joes' playing accomplishments include tieing the course record at the Hickam Par 3 as a 16 year old, as well as shooting the course record at San Jose Muni in 1977. Joe has given over 30,000 golf lessons to players of all levels. He has been teaching with video since 1985. He teaches the mechanics of the swing, first starting with the setup position to the foundation points of the swing. After the students learn and understand the basic swing motion, they begin to learn how to play the "game" of golf. Joe starts from the hole and works back (putting-chipping-pitching-half to full shots). A properly fitted set of clubs makes the process easier and achieves better long-term results. The student should not be fitted until a basic swing motion is developed. Whether trying to break 100 or 70, Joe can help you accomplish your goals. He is a certified club fitter with Tour Edge, Titleist, Callaway and Taylor Made. He can fit you with a proper set of clubs at any time. Mather Golf Course is stocked with golf clubs from Tour Edge, Nike, Titleist, Taylor Made, Callaway, Cobra and many other top brands.
